Gary Neville makes surprise Liverpool claim with fresh Premier League title prediction

Liverpool are currently top of the Premier League table after five wins from six games, but Gary Neville is not convinced that they will win the title this season

Gary Neville has suggested Liverpool are not on the same level as Arsenal and Manchester City in this season's Premier League title chase.

Taking to his Sky Sports podcast, the ex-Manchester United star delivered a blunt observation about the Reds' prospects, despite Arne Slot's side starting the season strongly. Liverpool currently top the Premier League standings with 15 points following wins against Ipswich, Brentford, Bournemouth, Wolves, and a convincing 3-0 victory over United.

Their only setback so far was a surprising 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest after Callum Hudson-Odoi scored a decisive goal in the 72nd minute. With just a one-point advantage over both City and Arsenal, Liverpool aim to extend their lead when they visit Crystal Palace for Saturday's lunchtime game.

Yet, Neville casts doubt over the team's trajectory post-Jurgen Klopp, expressing scepticism on whether they can maintain their form throughout the campaign. On his podcast, he said: "They're going to have a good season it looks like and maybe get Champions League football. I didn't feel like I was watching title winners [at Wolves] being honest with you."

He added: "They're well below Arsenal and City, but I don't think that's shocking anybody," reports the Liverpool Echo. Over the weekend, Liverpool secured a 2-1 win over Wolves with goals from Ibrahima Konate and Mohamed Salah, which eclipsed Rayan Ait-Nouri's equaliser in the 56th minute.

Neville is also tipping Arsenal as Manchester City's main challengers for the title this season, explaining: "There's no doubt that Arsenal are on their shoulder. Pep Guardiola is smelling and feeling the challenge. He wants this challenge. He loves to overcome this type of challenge.

"They don't want to give in City, they don't want to make it easy for them. But I like the way in which it is going to pan out. I think we're going to have a really good title race this season." City's recent stumbles include a 2-2 draw with a 10-man Arsenal and a 1-1 stalemate with Newcastle, which have seen Liverpool creep past them in the standings - stirring the pot even more before their matchup against Fulham at the Etihad.

Meanwhile, Mikel Arteta's Arsenal, boasting four wins and two draws from six matches after an August deadlock with Brighton, are inching ever nearer to lifting their first Premier League trophy in over two decades. The Gunners missed out by just five points to City in the 2022/23 season before cutting that margin to two points in the most recent campaign, with the title decided on the final day.

Liverpool are keen to secure their second Premier League title in history as the league draws to a close in May. The Reds famously clinched the trophy for the first time in the 2019/20 season, leading the league by 18 points with Klopp at the helm, and having won the Champions League the previous season with a 2-0 victory over Spurs.
