Sutton Park UPDATES: West Midlands Police confirm body of teenage boy pulled from lake

The teenager vanished in the water at Powell's Pool, a lake at Sutton Park in Sutton Coldfield, on Thursday evening, and West Midlands Police have confirmed he has died

A community is rocked this morning after the body of a teenage boy was pulled from a lake.

The grim discovery was made following a massive rescue operation when the youngster went missing in the water at Powell's Pool, a lake at Sutton Park. The vast and expansive Sutton Park, which is in Sutton Coldfield, West Midlands, is one of the largest urban parks in Europe.

The teenage boy has not been publicly named by West Midlands Police but the force says his family is being supported by specially trained officers. A West Midlands Police spokesperson said: "Extensive efforts by all emergency services were carried out following the boy going missing in the water just after 6pm. Specialist teams were deployed from fire and rescue, ambulance colleagues, and Birmingham City Council colleagues."

Flurry of emotional messages on social media

People across the West Midlands - and further afar - have shared emotional messages on social media following the gruesome discovery.

Locals posted their respects under the West Midlands Police Facebook update. One comment reads: "My thoughts are with the family such sad news." Another said: "This is heartbreaking, my son is a similar age and they have finished their exams and just want to have fun, such a terrible tragedy, sending love to the boys poor family."

A third wrote: "My condolences go out to this young man’s family and friends at this very sad time."

West Midlands Police confirm Sutton Park tragedy

In full, the brief statement from West Midlands Police reads: "The body of a teenage boy has been recovered from a pool in Sutton Park, Birmingham, this evening.

"West Midlands Police are supporting the family of the boy at this tragic time. Extensive efforts by all emergency services were carried out following the boy going missing in the water just after 6pm.

"Specialist teams were deployed from fire and rescue, ambulance colleagues, and Birmingham City Council colleagues. Sadly this has resulted in the boy’s body being found and our thoughts are with his family at this time. His death is not being treated as suspicious at this time and we are liaising with the coroner."
