Arsenal set for major cash injection after PSG loss ahead of crucial summer transfer window
by James Quinlan · football.londonArsenal have been eliminated from the Champions League, losing 2-1 at the Parc des Princes and thus 3-1 overall in aggregate to exit at the semi-final stage to Paris Saint-Germain.
Mikel Arteta and Co. were left with it all to do once Ousmane Dembele had handed the French champions a one-goal advantage at the Emirates Stadium eight days ago.
Arsenal then made a bright start to the second-leg meeting but found themselves two goals down on the night before Bukayo Saka was able to strike a late consolation.
For this season the dream of silverware is over, with only a top-five place in the Premier League left to claim.
It has been a difficult road for a club dealing with injury troubles, particularly in the forward line, throughout the course.
Therefore Arsenal, with new sporting director Andrea Berta installed, are expected to make yet more alterations to their squad to plug the gaps Arteta has struggled with - particularly a No.9.
And to help with the cause they are going to have Champions League winnings to take into the upcoming summer window.
All 36 clubs that competed in the League Phase banked €18.62 million (£15.6m) for participating.
€2.1m (£1.7m) was then handed out per win during that phase and €700k (£583k) per draw. That would mean Arsenal specifically collected €13.3m (£10.78).
Each position in the league phase table was worth €275,000 (£230k), meaning the Gunners won €9.35m (£7.82m) for finishing third in the standings.
Then finally each knockout round reached meant clubs were entitled to more funds. In this case, reaching the semi-final is worth €14.9m (£12.7m).
By getting to the round of 16 and quarter-finals too, Arsenal added around £20m to their prize money fund.
So, adding everything together Arsenal have won around £68m for their run to the 2024/25 Champions League semi-finals.
The mood will undoubtedly be one of disappointment in North London on this night, but this is a silver lining that can help to overcome this season's shortcomings.
