Enzo Maresca 'considering Chelsea future' after fallout with club chiefs

by · football.london

Enzo Maresca is reportedly considering his future with Chelsea after falling out with the club's hierarchy.

As per Sky Sports, the 45-year-old could opt to resign from his position after a "breakdown in relations with key figures" at Stamford Bridge. Kaveh Solhekol took to X - formerly Twitter - to write of the ongoing situation: "Enzo Maresca is considering his position as Chelsea head coach.

"Maresca may decide to resign after a breakdown in relations with key figures at the club. Maresca has stood by the comments he made on December 13th that many people at the club were not supporting him - or the team."

It comes as the Italian head coach has struggled for consistent form with the Blues of late, achieving just one win from his last seven Premier League matches. As a result, Chelsea currently sit fifth in the Premier League standings, 15 points shy of table toppers, Arsenal.

Elsewhere, after a 2-0 win against Everton midway through the month, Maresca lambasted a lack of support received from the club, in what he dubbed as the "worst 48 hours" of his tenure. Speaking during a press conference, he said: "Since I joined the club, the last 48 hours have been the worst because many people didn't support us."

When asked exactly what he meant, Maresca added: "Worst 48 hours since I joined the club because people didn't support me and the team."

Upon being specifically asked if he meant people internally at the club, he replied: "In general. In general," before later clarifying it was not directed at the fans, or the media: "I love the fans and we are very happy with the fans."

It comes as Chelsea were held to a 2-2 draw by AFC Bournemouth on Tuesday night, in a match which was packed with drama in the first-half. Moises Caicedo was shown a yellow card in the fourth minute of play after referee Sam Barrott deemed him to have fouled Adrien Truffert.

As a result of it coming as his fifth yellow in 18 matches, he will now miss Sunday's pivotal clash with Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium. David Brooks opened the scoring for the Cherries on the night, while England star Cole Palmer converted from the penalty spot moments later to draw level.

Enzo Fernandez gave Chelsea the lead in the 23rd minute, before Justin Kluivert dampened the Blues' parade by squaring the affair, once more, four minutes later. What then ensued was an unbreakable deadlock, as the points were split at Stamford Bridge.

Maresca failed to attend the post-match press conference for the fixture as a result of illness, with Willy Caballero stepping in to undertake media duties. He said: "Sometimes it's details, sometimes it's because the opponent finds a way to break through or to create those chances, but we need to find that kind of mentality to not let them find a way to make us lose those kind of games because we invest a lot.

"Today it was a really good game in terms of playing, how we played, how we went to the other box. We created many chances and, unfortunately, we are talking more about that stats than how players like Estevao [played], like Cole [played], and it's like that."
