Arsenal vs PSV simulated to predict the Gunners' Champions League Round of 16 fate
by Lewis Barton · football.londonArsenal will be looking to confirm their place in the Champions League quarter-finals when they take on PSV in their Round of 16 second-leg clash later tonight.
A brilliant Arsenal display alongside a dreadful defensive performance from PSV saw the Gunners win 7-1 against PSV in the Round of 16 first-leg clash last week, all but confirming Arsenal's spot in the next round of the competition unless PSV can muster up one of the greatest comebacks in history. A 1-1 draw against Manchester United on the weekend means that Mikel Arteta's side sit 15 points behind league leaders Liverpool in the Premier League, so the Champions League is likely Arsenal's biggest focus for the rest of the campaign.
Gabriel Martinelli returned to action on the weekend for the Gunners, with Bukayo Saka, Kai Havertz, Gabriel Jesus and Takehiro Tomiyasu Arsenal's only absentees. So, can Arsenal confirm their place in the Champions League quarter-finals tonight? Let's take a look...
Arsenal vs PSV score predicted
To complete this simulation, we used EA FC 25 and updated the squads with the latest injuries and suspensions.
We predict that Arsenal could line up in a 4-3-3 formation, with their starting XI as follows: Raya; White, Saliba, Kiwior, Tierney; Jorginho, Rice, Odegaard; Nwaneri, Trossard, Martinelli.
We predict that PSV could set up in a 4-2-3-1 formation, with their line-up as follows: Benitez; Ledezma, Flamingo, Obispo, Junior; Veerman, Schouten; Bakayoko, Til, Lang; De Jong.
Arsenal were slow out the gates at the Emirates Stadium, and they were made to pay when Luuk de Jong beat William Saliba in the air to head home Johan Bakayoko's cross from close range. This was one of those rare occasions where the Gunners could afford to not be at their best, but it didn't take long for Arteta's side to get on the scoresheet and level the score.
After picking out Gabriel Martinelli on the left, Declan Rice made a bursting run around the Brazilian to receive the ball on the overlap and charge towards goal. Rice rolled the ball into the path of Leandro Trossard, and a powerful strike saw him beat the 'keeper at the near post to make it 1-1.
Ethan Nwaneri and Martinelli both had great chances early in the second half to put the Gunners ahead, but good saves by Walter Benitez denied Arsenal from taking the lead. With 14 minutes to go, Jorginho pulled down Noa Lang inside the box to give away a penalty, and it was Lang who took the resulting spot kick as he fired home to put PSV back ahead.
Arsenal were unable to respond, but it didn't matter thanks to their huge aggregate lead as Arteta's side booked their spot in the next round. Real Madrid beat Atletico Madrid 4-2 on aggregate in the other Round of 16, clash setting up a meeting between Arsenal and the competition holders in the Champions League quarter-finals.
EA FC 25 predicted final score: Arsenal 1-2 PSV (Arsenal beat PSV 8-3 on aggregate)
