Thomas Tuchel's huge England salary revealed as ex-Chelsea boss doubles Gareth Southgate pay

Thomas Tuchel is set to be announced as the new England manager on Wednesday - and he's set to earn double what Gareth Southgate was paid during his time in charge of the Three Lions

Former Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel has signed a lucrative £5million-a-year contract with the Football Association to take on the role of England manager. The German is set to be unveiled as the Three Lions' new permanent manager in a press conference at Wembley Stadium on Wednesday.

After leaving his position at Bayern Munich at the close of last season, Tuchel has been effectively on gardening leave. However, he has chosen to end his hiatus from football to lead the Three Lions.

The deal between Tuchel and the FA chiefs was swiftly finalised on Tuesday after he emerged as their prime candidate. Lee Carsley has been acting as interim manager for the Nations League, but a shock defeat to Greece last week virtually extinguished his chances of securing the role permanently.

The FA's decision to opt for an established and successful club-level coach will come at a cost. Tuchel will pocket around £5m annually as England boss and will officially start his new role on January 1.

His predecessor, Gareth Southgate, who resigned after a defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final, had a £2.5m-a-year contract with substantial incentives and bonuses, reports the Mirror. Tuchel's contract will initially run for 18 months, covering the qualifying period for the 2026 World Cup and the tournament itself - provided the Three Lions qualify.

He is expected to officially assume control on New Year's Day, with Carsley overseeing the final two Nations League matches in November. The FA have managed to secure Tuchel as the new England manager without the need to pay compensation, despite his contract with Bayern running until July 2025.

The Bundesliga heavyweights have agreed to let Tuchel go free of charge, allowing him to take the reins of the national team. Tuchel, who has an impressive managerial CV with stints at Mainz, Borussia Dortmund, PSG, Chelsea and Bayern, is no stranger to success, having won the Champions League with Chelsea in 2021.

He triumphed over Manchester City and Pep Guardiola in that final, another managerial titan who was on the FA's radar. However, Guardiola seems set to extend his stay at City, which hastened the FA's pursuit of Tuchel.

Already having arrived in London, Tuchel joins the ranks of Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello as one of the few non-English managers to lead the Three Lions. His appointment comes amidst speculation that Manchester United were eyeing him as a potential successor to Erik ten Hag.

England captain Harry Kane has expressed his support for Tuchel, albeit cautiously, as official confirmation of the deal is pending. "To be honest, I haven't heard anything specific about it yet. That's why I can't really comment on it until it's officially announced," Kane shared with Sky Germany, reflecting on the discussions between Tuchel and the FA.

"We'll have to wait and see what happens. I obviously know Thomas very well from the last year. He's a fantastic coach and a fantastic person. I'm sure the FA will contact me when they know more about this issue."
