Arsenal handed major blow in Matheus Cunha transfer pursuit despite 'talks' beginning

Arsenal have reportedly opened talks to sign Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Matheus Cunha but it is understood that the Brazilian may want to move to a rival instead.

The 25-year-old has earned plenty of admiration this season having excelled for the West Midlands club despite them battling to avoid relegation. His 16 goals in all competitions have helped push Wolves to safety and now the focus is turning to where Cunha will be playing next season.

Mikel Arteta's side are looking for a centre-forward and according to Sky Sports News they have, alongside Aston Villa, held exploratory talks with Cunha's representatives.

There is a £62.5m release clause inserted into the Brazilian's deal so Arsenal know exactly how much they will need to spend to get him.

Despite looking almost certain to qualify for next season's Champions League, it is reported by Sky that Cunha's preference is a move to Manchester United.

Ruben Amorim's side are languishing in the lower reaches of the Premier League table and can only qualify for European competition if they win the Europa League.

While United are currently level on points with Wolves, Cunha is not thought to be concerned and views the Reds as one of the biggest clubs in the world. A source reportedly told the media outlet that the 25-year-old 'loves United'.

If this is the case, it would appear that Arsenal have little chance of signing the forward. Arteta may need to change focus to other targets to fill their attack after the lack of strikers at the club this season has cost them in the Premier League.

Sporting Lisbon's Viktor Gyokeres has been heavily linked with the Gunners while Newcastle United's Alexander Isak is seen as the dream target but Eddie Howe's asking price is thought to be too high.
