Viktor Gyokeres says exactly what Mikel Arteta and Arsenal want to hear before summer transfer
by Rob Guest · football.londonViktor Gyokeres has stated nobody has even seen the best of him yet ahead of a potential big-money transfer to Arsenal this summer. The Swede has hit a remarkable 97 goals in 102 games for Sporting CP, duly coming to the attention of some of Europe's biggest clubs in the process.
With Arsenal in desperate need of a proven goalscorer in their quest to win silverware, Gyokeres could well be the man to shoot them to glory if he can take his exploits from Portugal into the Premier League. Gyokeres does want to join Arsenal and he has not returned for training with Sporting CP after reportedly telling club president Frederico Varandas that he would not play for the side again.
football.london understands talks between the two clubs are set to reignite as they look to come to an agreement on the 27-year-old's future. Given his recent heroics in front of goal, where exactly does Gyokeres stand when it comes to the best strikers in the world such as Harry Kane, Robert Lewandowski and Erling Haaland? That was put to the striker in a recent interview with French publication L'Equipe.
"I'm definitely one of them," he admitted. "It's difficult to rank me, but yes, I'm on the same level as them now. They are extraordinary players, at the top level for many years, who have proven themselves much more than I have.
"For my part, I have to show that I'm capable of maintaining these performances season after season. What I managed to do at Sporting, I am convinced I can achieve anywhere. You have not yet seen the best of Gyokeres."
The striker has already had a spell with Brighton & Hove Albion in the Premier League but he unfortunately never featured for the club in the top flight and was instead restricted to eight cup appearances. Gyokeres admits "it would be great revenge," to return to the Premier League and finally make his mark in the competition.
"It's one of the biggest leagues in Europe," said the Stockholm-born ace. "I spent several years there without being able to play a single match. So, of course, it's something I'd like to do. It would be a great revenge!"
