Will Arsenal give Premier League champions Liverpool guard of honour as rule explained

by · football.london

Arsenal's wait to become Premier League champions again will go on another year after Liverpool were finally crowned the best team in England on Sunday.

Arne Slot's men have led the way throughout the 2024/25 season and after Arsenal drew 2-2 with Crystal Palace on Wednesday, confirmation of their title win came against Tottenham.

The Reds thumped the north Londoners 5-1 despite going a goal down through Dominic Solanke's opener. The win on Merseyside ended any slim hope that Arsenal could topple Slot's side, although the Gunners' focus has been on the Champions League for some time.

Liverpool will play the final four games of the season knowing they have done their job before getting their hands on the trophy on the final day of the season against Crystal Palace. However, before that, they will take on Arsenal at Anfield.

It is customary for the Premier League champions to receive a guard of honour when crowned champions before the final day of the season, although it isn't officially compulsory.

Usually, the opposing teams line up to applaud the champions as they emerge out of the tunnel. Arsenal infamously presented United with a guard of honour in 2013 with Robin van Persie returning to the Emirates Stadium.

There is nothing in the Premier League rulebook that forces clubs to give the champions their moment of respect. Mikel Arteta's men travel to Merseyside in a fortnight and it remains to be seen whether they will give the champions-elect a guard of honour.
