Arsenal can still win Champions League in less than three weeks and learn from PSG mistakes
by Tom Canton · football.londonThe Arsenal men’s side were knocked out of the Champions League at the semi-final stage, unable to replicate the same feat achieved by Renee Slegers’ team when they went to France themselves a goal down and turned their tie against Lyon on its head. Where Declan Rice, Gabriel Martinelli and Martin Odegaard could not take the early chances, an own goal forced by a Chloe Kelly corner gave the women's side the best platform.
Slegers would watch on as her team would go on to score three more times and see off a late surge to book their trip to Lisbon where they will face the iconic Barcelona. Mikel Arteta changed his side’s methodical build-up approach to attack PSG and create the early opportunities.
When the women’s side go to Portugal as massive underdogs they must look at both their win over Lyon and the men’s defeat to PSG with inspiration. They have already been able do what they had to in order to reach the final of the competition.
Taking your chances is ultimately what separates any teams looking to win their ultimate goals. You can create as many opportunities as you like but if you do not have the clinical touch to finish them off, you’ll be left rueing your mistakes.
The work done in the market with signings like Alessia Russo and Chloe Kelly has helped this Arsenal side progress again and reach this final. The depth of quality has given Slegers the options and ability to overcome these behemoths of the women’s sport like Lyon.
Barcelona are without question a different beast entirely. Having beaten Chelsea 8-2, the WSL leaders and potentially a side who can go unbeaten this campaign utterly trounced, the top side in the sport will give Arsenal a wholly new challenge.
For the Gunners, defend well, take your chances of however few arrive and you give yourself the best chance of victory. Lightning can strike twice and with the quality in the side, glory is very possible.
