Tottenham receive new Mohammed Kudus red card verdict vs West Ham as surprise VAR point made

Mohammed Kudus has been told it was the right decision for him to be sent off during the Premier League clash between Tottenham and West Ham. Late into the game, Kudus was shown a straight red card for violent conduct following a VAR review.

The Ghana international's afternoon started very differently as he opened the scoring midway through the first half. Just 68 minutes of action later though and he was trudging down the tunnel with his team 4-1 down ahead of a three-match suspension.

His reaction to fouling Micky van de Ven and subsequent slaps in the direction of both the Netherlands international and Pape Matar Sarr could have honestly seen him dismissed for three separate offences, however he was initially shown a yellow card.

Replays then clearly showed the offences committed with Andy Madley recommended by VAR to review his call and it only took a few glances for him to realise the punishment needed to be upgraded. Unsurprisingly, when asked about the incident, former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher agreed with the final decision.

Speaking on Sky Sports' Ref Watch, he said: “I think it’s a red card, there’s a lot of interesting things with this, you asked me the other week why they (the referees) stand back and watch, I can show you why. It’s because the referee gets banged into by Richarlison, accidentally obviously.

“But I think there he loses sight of what is going on, he’s trying to get involved, he gets banged, there, but then he misses what goes on, but VAR mops up. I think VAR did really well because it picked up the right player for the right offence and he was red carded.

“He’s rushed in, and I understand why referees do it, he's rushed in as the peacemaker for the two, but there, he gets clattered. I think at that moment he loses focus, he trying to get a view, but he’s already watching something different.

"But the VAR picks up on the fact, not only that (the initial hit out), but a little bit later. Look at the referee, he’s actually looking the other side.”
