Kylian Mbappe Real Madrid suspension latest before Arsenal clash as punishment 'confirmed'
by Kieran Horn · football.londonKylian Mbappe will serve a Real Madrid suspension after being shown a straight red card during their La Liga showdown with Alaves just three days before facing Arsenal in a Champions League quarter-final second leg.
The France captain has struggled to make a lasting impact in his last four Madrid appearances and though his presence was definitely felt this past weekend, it was for all the wrong reasons. Just 38 minutes into Sunday's league game with Alaves, Mbappe was sent off.
Referee Cesar Soto Grado initially dished him out a yellow card for the very late challenge on Antonio Blanco. However, a VAR review took place and that resulted in his punishment being upgraded to a red.
Thankfully for Los Blancos, it was not three games without a victory - as Eduardo Camavinga scored the only goal of the match. That scenario occurring again on Wednesday night is impossible, though, as the midfielder is banned after being sent off in the first leg.
Aurelien Tchouameni and Dani Ceballos will be back from suspension and injury respectively, however, and even though he was sent off, Mbappe will also be available and he could actually only be unavailable for one game.
La Liga rules state that a two-match suspension is the result of straight red cards, but the France captain may just miss this weekend's clash with Athletic Club Bilbao as the fact he made an attempt for the ball was included in the referee's report, according to Spanish outlet COPE.
In terms of potential Arsenal absentees, the likes of Kai Havertz, Gabriel Jesus and Takehiro Tomiyasu will remain absent due to injury.
Thomas Partey and Jorginho suffered issues in Saturday's draw against Brentford with the latter expected to miss the next few weeks and, thus, the second leg, according to The Mirror.
Some positive news that has also been noted in the report is that there is hope Partey will be fit to feature in the Santiago Bernabeu, but he could be absent for the semi-final first leg, if the Gunners progress. After being booked in the 3-0 win last week, he joined Declan Rice, Jurrien Timber and Gabriel Martinelli as suspension risks.
If the quartet can get through the clash against Madrid without being booked, the yellow cards already picked up in the Champions League will be wiped out.
