Thank you for joining our continuing live coverage of the war in the Middle East.
Here’s a recap of the latest developments:
- US President Donald Trump said he would suspend his plans to bomb Iran for another two weeks, sharing a post on Truth Social that he had received a 10-point proposal from Iran and was willing to negotiate.
- It followed a widely condemned threat from the president that “a whole civilisation will die tonight” as the hours ticked down to the 10am deadline he had set for Iran to agree to a deal that included reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
- Trump’s threat drew heavy criticism from fellow American conservatives, including several Republican senators.
- Pope Leo XIV also condemned the leader’s threat to destroy Iranian civilisation as “truly unacceptable”.
- US Vice President JD Vance confirmed US strikes on military targets on Iran’s major oil terminal on Kharg Island. He said the US has “got tools in our toolkit that we, so far, haven’t decided to use”, but that Trump would use them “if the Iranians don’t change their course of conduct”.
- Israel attacked Iranian infrastructure, targeting train tracks and bridges that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said were used by the Revolutionary Guards.
- The European commissioner for defence and space and former prime minister of Lithuania, Andrius Kubilius, said Europe remains firmly outside the Middle East conflict “for the time being”, but would not rule out the possibility of future participation in the war.
