Square Enix has delivered one of the best third-party Switch 2 ports to date with FF7 Remake Intergrade.

The Switch 2’s technical improvements means it’s equipped to handle many of the AAA games that skipped its predecessor, and Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade is an excellent example of that. The first entry in Square Enix’s FF7 Remake trilogy is great on Switch 2, even if there are a couple of compromises.

The best compliment that I can give to Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade’s Switch 2 port is that it feels like playing the game anywhere else. I’ve logged hours into the game on PS5 and PC, and the Switch 2 port never looked like a pared down, inferior version of the game. In fact, it’s gorgeous. The character models, lighting, effects, it’s an absolutely stunning game to look at in both TV and Handheld modes. In fact, the colors especially pop in handheld mode thanks to the tablet’s HDR (High Dynamic Range) capabilities. There are even HDR settings that you can adjust to your liking.

FF7 Remake is locked at 30 frames-per-second regardless of whether you play on a TV or in Handheld. On paper, that puts it firmly beneath alternate platforms, but I found that gameplay still felt incredibly smooth. This is likely because the game is incredibly stable; I didn’t notice any egregious frame drops at any point during my time playing. It also makes the jump between TV and Handheld mode feel seamless, which is great for me as someone who really takes advantage of the Switch 2’s hybrid function.

Still, there are light concessions with having Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade on the Switch 2. The aforementioned performance lock won’t go over well with all players—especially ones who’ve seen it running in Performance Mode elsewhere—but there’s more to it than that. The download is an eye-watering 90 gigabytes, meaning you’ll almost certainly have to delete multiple games to make space for it on your Switch 2. The game is also a battery devourer when your Switch 2 isn’t docked, something to keep in mind when playing on the go.

Still, Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade is an absolutely phenomenal video game, and everything that makes it great is present in the Switch 2 port. In just a few short hours, I found myself quickly getting re-immersed in this world, excited to keep playing and relive all of the story’s greatest moments.
