Baldur's Gate 3 TV show in development at HBO from Craig Mazin
Larian Studios is not involved with the BG3 show.
by Donovan Erskine · ShacknewsBaldur’s Gate 3, Larian Studios’ smash hit RPG, is the latest video game to be adapted into a television show. The Last of Us writer Craig Mazin will helm the series for HBO, but developer Larian Studios says it has no involvement with the project.
A Deadline report revealed the Baldur’s Gate 3 adaptation and Mazin’s involvement. The report notes that the show will not be a retelling of Baldur’s Gate 3’s story, but a continuation of it. Picking up immediately after the game’s conclusion, the show will include familiar faces as well as new ones.
Shortly after the news broke, a Larian spokesperson confirmed to Geoff Keighley that the studio was not involved with the series. Michael Douse, Larian’s director of publishing, said “Imma bout to crash out on main” in an X post in response to the announcement. He stated “I plead the fifth” when asked how the project was allowed to happen without the blessing of Larian Studios.
While Larian Studios developed and published Baldur’s Gate 3, the game is based on Dungeons and Dragons, an IP owned by Hasbro.
Swen Vincke, the CEO of Larian Studios, revealed that Craig Mazin has reached out to the studio and that they plan to share their thoughts with him.
Craig Mazin is currently working on Season 3 of The Last of Us, following the departure of Naughty Dog’s Neil Druckmann last year. For Larian Studios’ part, the company recently announced that their next game will be Divinity.
