Shack Chat: What did you think of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie?

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is finally here. Here's what we thought about it.

by · Shacknews

Let's-a-go! Three years after The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Nintendo and Universal Pictures have delivered a sequel. Many of us here at Shacknews have already seen The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, so of course we're going to talk about it for this week's Shack Chat!

Question: What did you think of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie?

Just so darn happy for Fox - Ozzie Mejia, Senior Star Fox Fan

I don't need to repeat myself too much. I made a lot of my points in my feature earlier this week about how The Super Mario Galaxy Movie saved Star Fox.

As a Mario movie, I had a great time. I thought Yoshi was a great addition, I thought the dynamic between Bowser and Bowser Jr. was a beautiful thing, and... well... there were some reveals that I wasn't expecting and I'm still not sure of the ramifications of the really big one. My only quibble is that I wish more focus had been given on some of those Mushroom Kingdom adventures, even if they didn't add to the greater plot necessarily. Outside of that, I loved it and I'm ready to see it again.

A Mario Fan’s Mario Movie - TJ Denzer, Popped for the Platforming

You know what I thought they did better than the first Mario movie right out of the gate? Conveyed the platforming. And then they continued to have fun with that through the whole movie. Mario is a platformer. It’s always been celebrated as one of the best examples of the genre, so to see Mario 1, Mario 2, Super Mario World, Super Mario Galaxy, Super Mario Sunshine, Super Mario 3D Land, Super Mario 3D World, and even Super Mario Maker elements worked in?

Wow. Yes, that was a lot of fun. And I liked how those parts fit into what they were doing. They didn’t feel shoehorned. The situation called for it. The Mario Bros. being the Mario Bros. was my favorite part, and I loved how Illumination pushed it to the forefront in the sequel where it was kind of a few little parts in the first film.

I loved it - Asif Khan, Senior Barrel Roll Expert

I will have a lot more to say in my official review of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, but I absolutely loved the film. Star Fox stole the show, but it had me grinning from ear to ear for the entire time.

I think… - Bill Lavoy, Shackmaps Overlord

I think the critics that gave this movie terrible scores should be afraid of how badly they’ve lost touch with the point of a movie like The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. My theater erupted in applause at the end. That’s a heavy disconnect.

But anyway, I thought the movie was delightful. Yoshi was a hit, Brie Larson as Rosalina was excellent. I loved the sequence where Bowser and Bowser Jr were watching Mario and Luigi as if they were in a 2D game, and the looks on their faces when the brothers somehow managed to overcome insurmountable odds. The movie was just a joy from start to finish.

Excited to see it! - Sam Chandler, Mr No Car

I put my car in at the mechanic two weeks ago to get the transmission fixed, and here I am, the week that The Super Mario Galaxy Movie releases, without any means of transport. I’m literally that SpongeBob Squarepants meme of Squidward inside watching SpongeBob and Patrick enjoying being outside. If everything goes to plan, I’m hoping to see the film next week, at which point I’ll get to partake in the exciting discourse taking place online. It seems like the film is delivering exactly what people hoped for the sequel: a delightful continuation of the first movie, ramped up to eleven with more spectacle and meaningful Easter eggs and reference.

Fun time at the movies - Donovan Erskine, New Donk City Reporter

I enjoyed The Super Mario Galaxy Movie! I thought it was right in line with the first one, though I wish we got more Rosalina. More than anything, I’m glad to see so many of my fellow Shack Staffers excited about going to the movies! I went to a midnight screening for the first time in over a decade and the energy was electric. There’s nothing like watching a new movie in a theater full of people absolutely pumped to see it.

As you can see, we're pretty happy with how Nintendo and Universal's second cinematic outing went. Share your thoughts with us in the Chatty and on social media!
