The Jewish community of Montreal is mourning the passing of Michel (Michael Moshe) Mizrahi, who succumbed to injuries sustained during Monday’s shooting incident in the Côte-des-Neiges neighborhood.

Mizrahi, a member of the local Jewish community who attended the Chabad-run MADA Community Centre, had initially been reported by ZAKA rescue organization as having passed away. The organization later clarified that he was alive but critically injured.

Community sources have since confirmed that he has died.

The shooting unfolded near Decarie Boulevard and Westbury Avenue in a heavily populated Jewish area and close to several Chabad institutions.

Authorities have not yet publicly clarified the exact circumstances surrounding Mizrahi’s death.

Community members have claimed that Mizrahi may have been struck by police gunfire during the exchange at the scene.

Community activist Aaron Schmeltzer said family members experienced hours of uncertainty following the incident.

Police were denying the man’s son access or information for several hours, Schmeltzer said.

The incident also resulted in the death of a police officer, while one of the suspects involved in the shooting was eliminated.

Mizrahi was known in the community and was remembered as someone who brought warmth to those around him.

“He loves to celebrate together with everyone,” said MADA community member David Kakon before Mizrahi’s passing. “Someone who is always smiling, always has a kind word for someone else. Loves his family, loves Israel, and loves being a Jew.”

He is survived by his son who is in Montreal and relatives in Israel.

Community organizations issued messages of mourning Tuesday evening as residents awaited further details from investigators.
