KUCHING (March 19): Sarawak’s strength lies in its people’s ability to celebrate their differences, said Rt Rev Datuk Danald Jute.

The Association of Churches in Sarawak (ACS) chairman noted that this spirit is reflected when people take part in one another’s celebrations and open their homes to friends and neighbours of all backgrounds.

“When we join in each other’s celebrations and invite our neighbours to celebrate together with us, we strengthen the social fabric that makes our region a beacon of hope and stability in the face of strive and divisions.

“Mutual respect is a foundation for a brighter tomorrow. The tradition of seeking forgiveness (‘Maaf Zahir dan Batin’) can serve as a powerful tool for healing as we seek to build a more harmonious and united future,” he said in his Hari Raya Aidilfitri message.

Danald, who is Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Kuching – covering Sarawak and Brunei, said that like many other festivals in Sarawak and Malaysia as a whole, Hari Raya Aidilfitri is not just a celebration for one community, but a shared moment of joy and thanksgiving that strengthens the bonds of “our big family.”

“Indeed our strength lies in our ability to celebrate one another’s milestones.

“Our unique tradition of ‘open houses’ reflects a spirit that transcends boundaries regardless of religious, ethnic or social backgrounds – to share together in a spirit of peace, acceptance and reconciliation,” he said.

On behalf of the Christian community, he extended sincere well-wishes to all Muslims celebrating Hari Raya.

“As you celebrate Hari Raya Aidilfitri, we pray that your homes be filled with joy, your hearts with peace, and your tables overflowing with manifold blessings,” said Danald.
