Education minister pays emotional tribute to late economist Datuk Dr Madeline Berma
by Samuel Aubrey · Borneo Post OnlineKUCHING (Dec 31): Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek has paid an emotional tribute to the late Datuk Dr Madeline Berma, describing the renowned Sarawakian economist and academic as a teacher, mentor and close friend who played a formative role in her life.
In a Facebook post, Fadhlina said she was deeply saddened by the loss, noting that Madeline was among the teachers who witnessed her personal struggles and growth over the years.
“I have lost a teacher and a good friend. Words cannot describe this sadness because she was among the teachers who saw my ups and downs,” she wrote.
Fadhlina recalled that during her time as a civil society activist, Madeline was her economics lecturer who introduced her to theories of poverty and helped shape her understanding of social justice and advocacy.
She also shared a fond memory of Dr Madeline, who would often joke with her and express pride in teaching as an Iban educator with a deep love for the country.
“I never cared about her religion or race. What I knew was that this Iban teacher taught me so much about poverty and what we must fight for in society,” she said.
Fadhlina expressed regret over postponing Madeline’s repeated invitation to treat her to Laksa Sarawak, knowing it was her favourite dish, citing her busy work schedule at the time.
“That is one thing I truly regret,” she said.
According to Fadhlina, Madeline was a constant source of guidance and support through both difficult and good times, always offering advice and encouragement without conditions.
“Rest in peace, Dr Meg (Madeline). Thank you for everything. Thank you for always accepting me as your student without conditions. I will remember you in this world and the hereafter,” she wrote, ending her tribute with an expression of deep affection for her late mentor.
