KUCHING (Sept 19): The Sarawak Labour Ordinance will be tabled in Parliament later this year, said Human Resources Minister Steven Sim Chee Keong.

He said this is good news for the workforce in Sarawak as they would have the same rights and protection as those in the peninsula.

“Thanks to the efforts and support of the Premier of Sarawak, the Sarawak Labour Ordinance will be tabled at the Parliamentary session later this year.

“Workers in Sarawak will have the same rights and protection as those in Peninsular Malaysia,” he said.

Sim said this when met by reporters after paying a courtesy call on Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg at Wisma Bapa Malaysia today, to establish collaboration between the Human Resource Ministry and the Sarawak government to enhance skills education in the state and country in general.

He also expressed his gratitude to Abang Johari for ensuring that the Sarawak Labour Ordinance is aligned with the Employment Act 1955, similar to the employment laws in Peninsular Malaysia.

He said Abang Johari had raised numerous issues regarding the need for skilled labor, especially in high-demand and growth sectors such as energy, transition, aerospace, and aviation.

“Therefore, the Premier of Sarawak also emphasised the need for skills training to nurture talents, especially among the people of Sarawak and Malaysia, in these sectors,” Sim said.
