NYC medical examiner conducts autopsies, determines cause of death for victims, shooter

The New York City Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined that the manner of death for all four people who were fatally shot in the Manhattan high rise was homicide.

The bodies of fallen NYPD Officer Didarul Islam, Aland Etienne, Wesley LePatner and a Rudin employee, as well as the shooter, Shane Tamura, were examined Tuesday.

Islam died from a gunshot wound to the torso and left upper extremity, while the other three victims died from gunshot wounds to the torso, the medical examiner said.

Tamura also died from a gunshot wound to the torso and his manner of death was ruled a suicide.

The medical examiner said a study of the brain, known as neuropathology, is part of the complete autopsy procedure. But it was unclear if Tamura's brain will be tested for Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a neurodegenerative disease linked to repeated trauma to the head, specifically.

New York Mayor Eric Adams previously said that Tamura alluded to having CTE and a grievance against the NFL, which has its headquarters in the building where the shooting took place.

A police official previously official told Fox News Digital the three-page note found in the gunman's wallet made references to CTE and expressed anger towards the NFL over the degenerative brain disease.

Union for slain security officer remembers him as a ‘New York hero’

The union that counted a slain security officer who was gunned down at a Manhattan office building as one of its members remembered him Monday as a “New York hero.”

Manny Pastreich, the president of 32BJ SEIU, said the union extends its condolences to the loved ones of Aland Etienne, whom he described as “a dedicated security officer who took his job duties extremely seriously.”

“This tragedy speaks to the sacrifice of security officers who risk their lives every day to keep New Yorkers and our buildings safe," Pastreich said. “Every time a security officer puts on their uniform, they put their lives on the line. NYC shooter worked security job at Las Vegas casino, wrote 'study my brain' in suicide note

New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch revealed that NYC high rise shooter Shane Tamura worked an overnight security job at a Las Vegas casino before he carried out the attack.

Tisch said Tamura didn't show up for work at the Horseshoe Las Vegas on Sunday.

Tisch said Tamura had a suicide note on him in which he claimed he suffered from Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE), a degenerative brain condition linked to repeated head trauma, possibly from playing high school football. He was angry at the NFL and that may have been his target. He also mentioned a Frontline documentary on CTE and several NFL players that suffered from the disease.

Tisch said Tamura wrote “study my brain. I’m sorry” in his suicide note.

She said he used an AR-15–style rifle he assembled himself. An associate of Tamura's helped him buy parts for the gun, Tisch said. Police have located that associate and are questioning him.

Detectives are traveling to Las Vegas where they will search Tamura’s home and visit the gun store where he legally purchased a revolver on June 12, using a Nevada concealed carry permit, Tisch said.

Tisch said police are also searching his car and the two phones he left at the scene.

“Last night, in an act of senseless violence, we lost a brother, a friend, and an NYPD hero,” Tisch said of NYPD officer Didarul Islam. “He knew that risk. He embraced it.”

Islam was one of four people killed in the attack.

"Shane was very quiet. He was a quiet, hard worker. He was coachable. So whatever we asked him to do, he was doing it. He led by, you know, his actions on the field," Roby told the outlet.

Roby also questioned if he could have helped Tamura.

"Could I have done more? Could I help the kid? Could I have reached out to him or could you reach out to me?" he questioned. "It's just a lot of things I'm trying to process right now."

In the wake of Manhattan mass shooting, NYC lawmaker urges New Yorkers to remain 'vigilant'

Rep. Nicole Malliotakis, R-N.Y., is warning New Yorkers to remain alert to their surroundings after a deadly mass shooting in the heart of Manhattan on Monday.

The lone Republican representing New York City in the House of Representatives cautioned that little is still known about what led to the incident, which she said appeared to be "isolated."

But she said it was another example of the dangers in today's world.

"It didn't seem like it was a random attack. It seemed he had a motive to go to that particular building. But everyone has to stay vigilant. I mean, we know in a post-9/11 world we always need to remain vigilant, keep our eyes open and report things that feel suspicious," Malliotakis said.

She said it was a "concerning" situation, noting the man was captured on camera armed with an assault rifle walking into the Park Avenue building, where he soon opened fire.

"My heart breaks for the wife and the children of this police officer, and all the families that lost loved ones yesterday. Because people, you know, leave their house, they go to work, they go about their usual routine and they don't come home," Malliotakis said.

"And that's obviously shocking, and it's heartbreaking, but it's also a reminder of how fragile life is and how we need to remain vigilant as a community and a country. Anything can happen at any time."

The office said it will share the cause and manner of death determination for Tamura when available.

The 27-year-old turned the gun on himself last night after killing four people inside an office building in Manhattan that is home to companies including the NFL.

NY Gov. Hochul calls for national 'assault weapons' ban following NYC shooting

The Democrat governor of New York is calling for a “national assault weapons ban” following the shooting in New York City last night.

“The killer used an AR-15–style assault rifle. The same weapon of war used in mass shootings across America,” Kathy Hochul said in a statement Tuesday. “New York has some of the strongest gun laws in the nation. We banned assault weapons. We strengthened our Red Flag Law. We closed dangerous loopholes. But our laws only go so far when an AR-15 can be obtained in a state with weak gun laws and brought into New York to commit mass murder.

“The time to act is now. The American people are tired of thoughts and prayers,” she added. “They deserve action. Congress must summon the courage to stand up to the gun lobby and finally pass a national assault weapons ban before more innocent lives are stolen.”

Hochul also called the shooting a “horrific act of violence” and said her heart is with the loved ones of slain NYPD officer Didarul Islam, “his NYPD family and every victim of this tragedy.”

NYC gunman may have been targeting NFL office but took wrong elevator, mayor says

New York City Mayor Eric Adams revealed Tuesday that gunman Shane Tamura appeared to take the wrong elevator bank inside 345 Park Avenue Monday when he carried out his attack.

Adams, speaking to Fox 5 New York, said "it appears as though he was going after the employees at the NFL."

The mayor said there were two elevator banks inside the building and Tamura “appeared to have gone to the wrong bank and he ended up on the floor of Rudin Management.

“And you see on the video that he discharged the weapon several times and we must commend Rudin Management for the safety precautions that they have put in place, even a safe bathroom where you can lock it down with a bulletproof door. Some of the staffers used that,” Adams continued.

“It’s unfortunate that during these days and times, active shooter drills are taking place all across the country and Rudin Management did their job of clearly having those active shooter drills and the staffers who were in the building were able to utilize some of the safe rooms and I believe it played a great role in saving lives of some of the staffers,” Adams added.

“It was after 6 p.m. and so many people were no longer in the office, but he appeared to have gone to the wrong floor and due to the wrong elevator bank where you can see on the front desk, which elevator bank was the NFL. But he did not go to that bank,” Adams also said.

NY Dem points finger at GOP opposition to gun control after deadly shooting

Rep. Dan Goldman, D-N.Y., swiftly pointed the finger at Republicans' opposition to gun control in the wake of the deadly shooting in New York City.

"He drove from Las Vegas to New York with an AR-15, which cannot be purchased in New York. He walked into an office building and started spraying the lobby with that AR-15, killing the police officer whose handgun was no match for the AR-15. This isn’t about New York. This is about Republicans persistently blocking common sense gun safety reform, including an assault weapons ban, that a super majority of Americans support," Goldman declared in a post on X.

Goldman made the remarks when responding to comments by Trump-backed Ohio gubernatorial hopeful Vivek Ramaswamy.

"Another brave police officer murdered in cold blood in New York tonight. This isn’t just tragedy, it’s the cost of weak leadership and anti-cop policies. No more coddling criminals. No more “defund the police.” Time to crush the spread of crime & make American cities safe again," Ramaswamy wrote.
