Delhi-Zurich SWISS flight faces engine problem during takeoff, 6 passengers injured

Delhi-Zurich SWISS flight, LX147: The aircraft was accelerating on runway 28 at around 1.08 am when the issue with one of the engines occurred. Passengers and crew were evacuated using emergency slides, IANS reported.

A SWISS flight bound for Zurich from Delhi was forced to abort takeoff at Indira Gandhi International Airport early Sunday after an engine issue was detected while the aircraft was accelerating on runway 28 at around 1:08 am. Six people sustained injuries in the incident and were subsequently taken for medical treatment. Following the emergency, passengers and crew were evacuated using emergency slides.

“Six passengers currently receiving medical attention, crew unharmed. All passengers and crew evacuated the aircraft via the emergency slides. Six passengers are currently undergoing medical evaluation. For a small number of individuals who were unable to use the slides, stairs were provided,” IANS quoted the airline as saying.

As the situation escalated, the fire department was alerted at 2:06 am about a “full hydraulic emergency” on Runway 28, the airport’s night runway. Five fire tenders were immediately dispatched to the scene. The situation was brought under control, and the aircraft was safely handled by around 3:30 am, ANI reported, quoting fire officials.

DEL-ZRH Flight LX147: Engine issue detected during takeoff

At the time of the incident, Swiss International Air Lines flight LX147 (DEL-ZRH) had 232 passengers on board, including four infants, along with crew members

“We are aware of an incident involving flight LX147 in Delhi. The aircraft involved is an Airbus A330 (HB-JHK). SWISS has established a task force. There were 228 passengers and 4 infants on board. Shortly after takeoff, just after 1 am local time in India, an issue occurred with one of the engines,” SWISS said in a statement.

Meanwhile, the airline said it is bringing in SWISS technical specialists to inspect the aircraft and determine the cause of the incident.

“SWISS technical specialists will travel to Delhi to inspect the aircraft and initiate the next steps. At the same time, we are working intensively to find swift and suitable onward travel solutions for all passengers,” according to the airline.

Swiss International Air Lines arranges passenger support 

The airline also said it is taking care of passengers on site while arranging onward travel solutions for all affected travellers.

“They have received contact cards to ensure we can reach them reliably. Such a situation is stressful for everyone involved. Our local teams are taking care of our passengers on site,” the airline added.
