13 years after the devastating Jhiram Ghati ambush, all 10 accused sentenced to death by special court

Conviction in the high-profile case of the 2013 Jhiram Ghati ambush, carried out by the rebels in the Bastar district of Chhattisgarh, resulted in the sentencing of the 10 guilty individuals to the death sentence by the special National Investigation Agency (NIA) court on Wednesday.

The ambush and high-profile casualties of 2013

This horrific attack was executed on May 25, 2013, when a group of armed Maoists ambushed a convoy of Congress party members traveling through a national highway in Jhiram Valley following a Parivartan Rally.

Devastating outcome: The massacre led to the death of 29 people, comprising of security guards, innocent civilians, and a few political figures.

Senior party leaders lost: Among the victims were the then state Congress party chief Nand Kumar Patel, his son Dinesh Patel, former leader of the opposition Mahendra Karma, former union minister Vidya Charan Shukla, and former member of the legislative assembly Uday Mudliyar.

Conclusion in the courts

Special Judge Abhay Singh Rajput, of the special NIA court of Jagdalpur, found the 10 accused individuals, including two women, guilty after hearing 101 witnesses and going through various documents.

Sentencing from the court and subsequent legal procedures

The concerned court sentenced the convicts to the death penalty in case of seven out of 24 charges levied against them, together with a fine of Rs 800 each.

Limitations on execution: The convicts’ death sentences depend on approval from the High Court, while they will be kept in custody at the central prison until then.

Right to appeal: Within 30 days after receiving the court’s verdict, the defense is permitted to submit an appeal in the High Court.

Political aftermath and allegations of conspiracy

In the wake of this unprecedented verdict, the political arena in Chhattisgarh has been engulfed in fierce political debates on how thorough the original investigations were as well as conspiracies.

Need for further investigation: Former chief minister Bhupesh Baghel stated that conducting an independent investigation by SIT of the state would have revealed who was behind this conspiracy.

Counter allegations: Denying these allegations, former chief minister and BJP politician Raman Singh said that the opposition parties were indulged in politics and not in the seriousness of the judicial decision.
