Blue Fox Takes North American Rights to Family Adventure ‘Momo,’ Starring Martin Freeman and Claes Bang (EXCLUSIVE)

by · Variety

Sales company Epsilon Film has closed a raft of distribution deals on live-action family adventure “Momo,” starring Martin Freeman and Claes Bang.

“Momo” follows orphan Momo as she battles the mysterious Men in Gray, who steal everyone’s time, and stealthily take over her city.

“Momo” is based on the novel by Michael Ende, best known as the author of “The Neverending Story,” which was adapted as a hit fantasy film. That film, directed by Wolfgang Petersen, grossed $20.3 million and spawned two sequels.

Epsilon Film has closed a raft of international deals, led by Blue Fox Entertainment picking up U.S. and Canada rights. They are known for such hits as “The Wolf and the Lion” and “Lost on a Mountain in Maine.” “Momo” is scheduled to be released in theaters in the summer.

Foxx Media Group secured Slovakia and the Czech Republic and releases theatrically in February; Another World Entertainment took Denmark and Norway; Selim Ramia & Co acquired the Middle East; and Ricochet Digital Media added worldwide inflight rights.

In the film, “Momo” lives in the ruins of an old Roman amphitheater and treasures her friendship with Gino. When a greedy corporation begins stealing everyone’s time, she must team up with a mysterious tortoise and Master Hora, the guardian of time, to save her city in a race against the clock.

The film is shot in English, directed by Christian Ditter (“Love, Rosie,” “How to Be Single”). It stars Emmy and BAFTA-winning Freeman (“The Hobbit” trilogy, “Sherlock,” “Black Panther”), Bang (“The Square,” “Dracula,” “The Northman”), Alexa Goodall, Araloyin Oshunremi, Kim Bodnia, Laura Haddock and Jennifer Amaka Pettersson.

It is produced by Rat Pack Filmproduktion (“The Wave,” “Wickie/Vicky,” “Colonia Dignidad”), in co-production with Constantin Film (“Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die,” “Regretting You,” “Resident Evil”), and in collaboration with Westside, Beta Film, Noisemaker and Pakt Media.

Producer Christian Becker said: “In a world that’s constantly rushing forward, ‘Momo’ reminds us that time is the most precious asset human beings possess — and that slowing down can be an act of courage. ‘Momo’ speaks to all generations. It’s a story about friendship, listening, and the simple truth that time is the most precious asset we can give to one another.”

Ditter added: “ ‘Momo’ was born from a childhood dream. I read Michael Ende’s novel as a kid and knew someday I wanted to bring it to the big screen. The story’s message feels more urgent now than ever: in a world that demands we optimize every moment, true connection requires us to slow down and be present with each other. I’m thrilled that American audiences will have the chance to discover Momo’s world.”
