‘Widow’s Bay’ Wins Most Emmys Ever for a Comedy Series in a Year, Breaking ‘The Studio’s’ Record

“Widow’s Bay” is the most awarded comedy season in Emmy history.

Apple TV‘s horror-comedy closed the weekend with 14 Emmys — eight banked at the Creative Arts ceremonies and six more on Monday’s telecast — surpassing the 13 that “The Studio” won a year ago for the most Emmys ever collected by a comedy series in a single year.

The haul, from its impressive 19 nominations, was anchored by the top prize itself: “Widow’s Bay” won outstanding comedy series over “Abbott Elementary,” “The Bear,” “Hacks,” “Margo’s Got Money Troubles,” “Nobody Wants This,” “Only Murders in the Building” and “Shrinking” — a field that included the record-nominated “Hacks.”

“Just personally, I have to quickly thank my mom for always making Halloween fun,” creator Katie Dippold said while accepting the award. “Also, this group was such a great collaboration of the best, wonderful weirdos and artists. These writers, these producers, these amazing actors, these directors.”

“Hiro [Murai], thank you again. God, the editors. I’m going to name everyone. The cinematographer. It’s just a wonderful group. Thank you, Apple, for letting us take this crazy, creative swing. They truly just let us do this weird show, and we can’t thank you enough,” she continued. “And we’d also like to thank the evil entity on the island that trusted us with its story.”

Apple’s ensemble converted almost everything it touched Monday night, with Matthew Rhys taking home the award for lead comedy actor, Kate O’Flynn winning for supporting actress, Stephen Root for supporting actor, Hiro Murai for directing — a first for an Asian director — and writing for Dippold’s premiere episode. In addition, the show won at the Creative Arts for Betty Gilpin’s guest comedy actress, production design, casting, cinematography, music composition, music supervision, sound editing and sound mixing.

The total caps one of the fastest ascents the comedy field has seen for a series that turned late-breaking buzz into a record-setting showing.

This year’s Emmy nominations were led by “The Pitt” with 25 nominations, followed by “Hacks,” “Widow’s Bay” and “Beef.”
