‘The Sticky’: Great Canadian Maple Syrup Heist Series Sets Amazon Premiere Date, Drops First-Look Photos (EXCLUSIVE)

by · Variety

The Amazon Prime Video dark comedy series “The Sticky” has set its premiere date, Variety has learned exclusively.

The six-episode half-hour series will debut on Dec. 6. In addition, Variety has obtained first-look photos from the series, which can be seen below.

“The Sticky” stars Margo Martindale, Chris Diamantopoulos, and Guillaume Cyr. It is inspired by the true story of the so-called “Great Canadian Maple Syrup Heist,” which made international headlines in 2012 when it was revealed that over $18 million (CAD) worth of maple syrup had been stolen from Quebec’s national reserve. The show was ordered to series at Amazon in 2022.

The official series description states that it “follows Ruth Landry (Martindale), a tough, middle-aged maple syrup farmer who turns to crime when the bureaucratic authorities threaten to take away everything she loves. She teams up with the hot-tempered Bostonian mobster (Diamantopoulos), and a mild-mannered French-Canadian security guard (Cyr) to carry out a multi-million dollar heist on Quebec’s maple syrup surplus.”

In an interview with Variety, Martindale said she was shocked to discover that such a heist had really taken place. “I first thought this couldn’t be a real thing,” she said. “It was wild to learn about it. I love knowing about this now…I learned way, way, way, way too much about maple syrup.”

Martindale went on to praise her co-stars Diamantopoulos and Cyr, as well as the show’s French-speaking cast. When asked to described the dynamic between the three main characters and the roles they play in the heist, she said, “Well, obviously I’m the smart one. I’m the brains of the operation, I think, and, and I guess Guillaume is the heart, and Chris is the is the muscle. But it’s sort of a Three Stooges situation.”

Jamie Lee Curtis executive produces the series under her Comet Pictures banner and also appears in a guest star role. It marks one of her first releases since she won the Emmy for outstanding guest actress in a comedy series for “The Bear.”

“She’s been so supportive and helpful and on every on every level,” Martindale said of Curtis. “It was great working with her, playing with her, and getting to know her.”

Ed Herro and Brian Donovan created “The Sticky” and serve as executive producers and showrunners. Along with Curtis, Jonathan Levine and Gillian Bohrer executive produce for Megamix. Jason Blum, Chris McCumber, Jeremy Gold, and Chris Dickie executive produce via Blumhouse Television, with Michael Dowse also executive producing. Lauren Grant serves as co-executive producer. Associate producers include Josée Vallée and Bruno Dubé for Sphere Media, Inc and Russell Goldman for Comet Pictures.

“There’s nothing more Canadian than maple syrup,” Herro said in a statement. “And there’s nothing more entertaining to watch than three completely unqualified crooks attempting to steal millions of dollars of the stuff. ‘The Sticky’ is the tale of three unexpected strangers getting in over their heads, in a desperate attempt to get their sticky fingers on what they feel they deserve. What they’re owed. Against all odds and against all common sense. Just as sap is the lifeblood of the maple tree, maple syrup is the lifeblood of Canada. So this unique underdog story — inspired by the largest crime in Canadian history — is both the uniquely Grade A Canadian tale while also remaining completely universal. Working with Margo, Chris and Guillaume (as well as Jamie Lee Curtis!) was not only a dream come true, but a constant creative bubble wherein we all worked hand-in-hand to expand this world.”

“What’s more fun than a story about quirky underdogs risking everything to stick it to the man? That’s ‘The Sticky,’ about three oddball outsiders who decide that if no one’s gonna give them their fair share they’ll just have to team up and steal it,” Donovan added in his own statement. “People are going to love them; the bickering, the camaraderie, the comedy. And best of all, it’s pure undiluted Margo Martindale. You haven’t lived until you’ve seen Margo yelling curse words out a pickup truck window. I can’t wait for the world to see her, and Montreal, and all the fantastic work from the entire cast and crew. And the best part is: this crime really happened! Did you know maple syrup is worth more than oil? Neither did I. Did you know a ragtag group of criminals stole 20 million dollars of it just 15 years ago? Me either! That insanity inspired our show, and we’re dying to make more and tell the rest of this incredible story.”
