Box Office: ‘Practical Magic 2’ Conjures Up $13 Million on Friday as ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Nears All-Time Domestic Box Office Record

“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” will finally be dethroned after a six-week streak at No. 1, falling to Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman’s mystical sequel, “Practical Magic 2.”

“Practical Magic 2” landed at No. 1 on Friday, making $13 million at 4,146 North American screens. By Sunday, the Warner Bros. dramedy should pull in around $30 million, good enough for a first-place finish for the weekend.

The original “Practical Magic” bombed in 1998, opening to just $13 million against a budget of $75 million. It only got to $94 million worldwide by the end of its run. However, the film achieved cult classic status after it was released on home video. Based on the novel by Alice Hoffman, the film followed magical sisters Sally and Gillian Owens, young witches who work to break a generational curse that kills any man they fall in love with.

“Practical Magic 2” picks up 25 years later, as Sally’s daughters now must grapple with their family curse. Original stars Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing return alongside Bullock and Kidman. Other cast members include Maisie Williams, Joey King, Xolo Maridueña and Lee Pace.

Friday’s other major newcomer, Focus Features’ “The Uprising,” didn’t fare quite as well and fell to ninth place. It earned $1.38 million domestically on its opening day from 2,068 screens. Through the weekend, the historical drama should make $3.1 million.

From writer-director Paul Greengrass, “The Uprising” follows a 14th-century ploughman who leads a common man uprising against King Richard II. Andrew Garfield stars. Other cast members include Jamie Bell, Stephen Dillane, Woody Norman and Katherine Waterson.

Angel Studios’ “Runner” took second with an estimated $2.5 million on Friday from 2,568 locations. Rival estimates have the actioner making $6 million by Sunday. Alan Ritchson and Owen Wilson star in “Runner,” which follows a soldier and his less battle-ready partner as they run from the cartel. Other cast members include Rodrigo Santoro, Leila George and Kate Box.

Universal’s “The Odyssey” landed in third place on Friday, grossing $2.06 million. It looks to add $8.1 million by Sunday. Through nine weekends, Christopher Nolan’s historical epic should reach a domestic haul of $601 million.

Despite falling to No. 4, “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” is still pulling in the dough. The Sony-Marvel tentpole made $2 million as it enters its seventh weekend in North American Theaters. It’s targeting $8.5 million by Sunday, which would push its domestic total to $935.27 million.

“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” is inches away from breaking the all-time domestic box office record. $936.6 million is the number to beat, a record set by 2015’s “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.”

Finally, in fifth, was Ketchup Entertainment’s “Coyote vs. Acme.” The Looney Tunes comedy grossed about $1.4 million on Friday, and by Sunday, it should pull in an estimated $6.3 million, tallying up its domestic gross to $47.8 million through three weekends.
