Margot Robbie ‘May Be Over’ Playing Harley Quinn, but James Gunn Would ‘Bend Over Backwards’ to Include Her in the DCU

by · Variety

As James Gunn‘s fledgling DC Universe continues to grow, he’s revealed that one key character will “almost certainly” return: Harley Quinn. But Margot Robbie, who played the anti-hero in three DCEU movies, may not be back.

On “The Suicide Squad: Is It Canon? The Official Podcast,” Gunn was joined by Jennifer Holland and Steve Agee, who starred in his debut DC movie “The Suicide Squad,” to discuss which parts of the pre-reboot film will carry over into the new universe. The trio discussed several dead characters from the film and actors that have played multiple DC roles (such as Sean Gunn, Nathan Fillion and Michael Rooker), but ultimately decided that most of the movie is canon to the rebooted DC Universe.

“That settles it then. I think that ‘The Suicide Squad’ is within the canon of the DCU. It’s decided,” Gunn said. “I’d say, we have one small asterisk, which is what exactly is the future of Harley Quinn? I want to be given a little leeway with this by the fans because I’m not sure exactly how that’s going to manifest itself. But other than that, I think that we can pretty much say the entire movie is canon. I don’t think there’s a problem.”

Earlier in the podcast, Gunn explained that Robbie has become “kind of the biggest female star in the world” and that he isn’t sure if she’d return to play Harley Quinn. She debuted as the first live-action Harley Quinn in David Ayers’ “Suicide Squad” in 2016, then returned for “Birds of Prey” in 2020 before joining Gunn’s standalone sequel in 2021.

“She’s just so crazy. I love her as Harley. I don’t know if she wants to play Harley again. She may be over that,” Gunn said on the podcast. Since “The Suicide Squad,” Robbie has of course conquered the box office as “Barbie” in addition to starring in Emerald Fennell’s “Wuthering Heights.” She’s next set to star in Tim Burton’s “Attack of the Fifty Foot Woman,” so her schedule may be too packed to revist Harley Quinn — at least for now.
