Malaysian celebrity faces backlash over her remarks about Halloween, Christmas and Easter
The actress also listed Halloween, Christmas and Easter, describing them as “weird” as she questioned certain practices associated with the celebrations, including children dressing up and what she described as “worshipping demonic characters or death”.
“The most ridiculous celebration in my opinion. They really go all out for it. Christmas, Easter, Halloween… they’re all weird. They all involve children dressing up, asking for candy or chocolate, sitting on old men’s laps, and worshipping some demonic, satanic or supernatural characters, or death,” she wrote.
Her remarks later drew criticism from netizens, with many taking issue with her views on the celebrations, prompting her to issue a public apology.
“I’m still in the process of learning about religion and beliefs”
In her apology, Zahirah clarified that she never intended to offend anyone or belittle their beliefs, adding that she is still learning more about different religions and beliefs.
“First and foremost, I would like to apologise if my post offended anyone. I deleted it shortly after uploading it to prevent further misunderstandings.
“I never intended to hurt or offend anyone’s beliefs. I am still in the process of learning about religion and beliefs. Since then, I have also been doing my own research, not just into my own beliefs, but also those of others,” she wrote in her Instagram story.
However, she clarified that her views were not intended to target any particular group, but rather stemmed from her questions and efforts to understand the matter better.
She explained that her post was simply an expression of her questions as she tried to make sense of what she had observed, adding that Islam teaches her to treat others with fairness, kindness and respect rather than insult anyone.
