An investigation is under way into the death of a man whose body was found at a property in Midleton, Co Cork.

The 66-year-old man was found in an unresponsive state after emergency services were called to an apartment at Broomfield West shortly after 4pm.

He was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later.

His body has been removed from the property and a technical examination has also been completed.

The scene remains cordoned off.

A post-mortem examination on his body is likely to take place tomorrow at Cork University Hospital, the results of which will direct the nature of the garda investigation.

A woman was also brought to Cork University Hospital after being treated at the scene.

Gardaí have said the man's death is unexplained. RTÉ News understands the investigation will centre on what the man and woman may have ingested and what the source of that was.
