Forensic examination under way in Derry after woman dies
by Conor Macauley, https://www.facebook.com/rtenews/ · RTE.ieA forensic examination is under way in Derry at the house which is at the centre of a murder investigation.
A woman was found badly injured at the property at Summer Meadow Mews on the Waterside area of the city at around 10:20am.
She died later at Altnagelvin Hospital in the city.
Police remain at the scene.
A security cordon has been placed around the house and forensic officers have moved inside.
A man in his 30s has been arrested on suspicion of murder.
Detective Inspector Michelle Griffin from the PSNI's Major Investigation Team said: "Our thoughts are with her family and loved ones, who are left trying to come to terms with this shocking loss."
It is believed a separate police operation earlier in the day in a different part of the city is linked to the murder investigation.
Officers in forensic gear were seen examining a car which had been abandoned on the Foyle Bridge in the city.
That area has since been reopened.
Derry SDLP MLA Mark H Durkan said "right across the area, people are in shock at this heartbreaking and horrific incident".
"It really has shocked the city. It has particularly shocked the local community here," he said.
"This is absolutely just devastating, and it's just horrific that we're seeing another life lost, another woman's life lost to violence."
While Sinn Féin MLA Ciara Ferguson has said there is shock and devastation across Derry following the death of the woman.
"Our heartfelt thoughts are with this woman's loved ones as they face the unimaginable loss which this horrific crime has brought upon them.
"A young woman's life was taken in the latest act of violence against women and girls and I appeal to anyone with information to bring it forward to the PSNI," she said.
"The Executive’s Strategic Framework to End Violence Against Women and Girls sets out how it aims to tackle this scourge in our society. But we must all do more to confront the causes and cultures behind this violence and to do everything possible to bring the harm and abuse of women to an end."
