Parrott the match-winner as Real Betis upset Real Madrid

Republic of Ireland international Troy Parrott made it a home debut to remember for Real Betis as he came off the bench to score the match-winning goal against La Liga giants Real Madrid.

The Dubliner, who joined the Seville club from AZ Alkmaar last month, was the central figure as the hosts broke the deadlock in the 82nd minute at Estadio De La Cartujo.

Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois made a fantastic save to deny Nelson Deossa's bullet of a header from a corner, but he could only parry it into the path of Parrott, who was quickest to react to fire home.

"That's a striker's job," Parrott said after the match. "To go in after the ball and hope that it will fall in front of me. Look, in a game I might do this 10 times and it might not happen. So it's a mentality thing to just keep going in and hopefully it comes and today it did."

It looked as if Jose Mourinho's side, who have begun the La Liga season with three straight wins, had rescued a point in the 87th minute when Carlos Espi found the back of the net with an acrobatic finish, but VAR deemed that Vinicius Junior had strayed offside.

Los Blancos had another glorious chance to earn a share of the spoils but Killian Mbappe missed a penalty in added time.

Manuel Pellegrini's side held on to claim a famous win and move level with Madrid on nine points after four games to continue their impressive start to the season.

"I don't know how we lost because we played very well collectively. I cannot fault the attitude of any of my players. We deserved to win but deserving to win does not give you points," Mourinho said.

"I’m very happy with my players, all of them. I cannot fault any of them individually. As for the penalty, when one of us steps up to take it, we all stand together.

"The Betis players are more streetwise than the Madrid players, who are very honest. With the backing of a fantastic crowd, they manage to gain these kinds of advantages."
