President Michael D Higgins has spent a second night in hospital for the treatment of an infection.

President Higgins is in St James's Hospital in Dublin where he is having antibiotic treatment for a localised infection.

Yesterday, a spokesperson said the president's condition had improved but that he would remain in hospital to continue the course of antibiotics.

He said the president was in good spirits and feeling well.

President Higgins travelled to the hospital by arrangement on Sunday and stayed in overnight for the last two nights.

Last year, President Higgins spent several days in St James's Hospital as a precaution to monitor his blood pressure.

At the time, the president thanked the public for the "outpouring" of support he had received.

He later revealed he had suffered a mild stroke.

President Higgins will remain in office at Áras an Uachtaráin until Catherine Connolly's inauguration in Dublin Castle on 11 November.
