New York Mayor calls on US government to arrest Netanyahu

The Mayor of New York City has called on the US government to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Zohran Mamdani made the statement in a video released yesterday.

The Hague-based International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Netanyahu in 2024, over alleged war crimes committed during the Gaza war.

Israel has said it rejects the court's jurisdiction and denies committing war crimes.

Mr Mamdani said his administration reviewed "every avenue available" under law to examine whether New York City could execute the arrest warrant.

He said the administration does not have the legal authority to enforce the warrant or arrest Mr Netanyahu.

"The federal government, however, does, and I call on them to join the ICC and execute this warrant," he said.

President Donald Trump said that Mr Netanyahu, who traditionally travels to New York every September for the annual gathering of world leaders at the United Nations General Assembly, will not be arrested when he visits the US.
