The missing in Nepal-Tibet flash floods

Nearly 1,400 people are reported missing after flash floods and landslides at the Nepal-Tibet border.

They include hikers and climbers, many of whom travel to the Himalayan nation to test themselves on some of the world's highest peaks, as well as Hindu devotees on pilgrimages.

These figures are likely to change, which is not uncommon after a major disaster.

Double-counting of dual nationals, matching bodies with people listed as missing and the chaos of a disaster can contribute to fluctuations both upwards and downards in the figures.

At least 1,381 people are missing.

Nepal's disaster agency said that 823 people were unaccounted for, including at least 517 foreigners.

It did not give a breakdown of the number of Nepalis or nationalities of the foreigners.

Nepal's tourism board put the number of missing tourists - Nepali and foreign - at 644.

Its further breakdown of the nationalities is included below.

Across the border with Tibet, China said that 558 people - including 260 foreigners - are missing.

Nepal

The new Nepal Tourism Board figures said that 127 visitors to the country were among the 644 it listed as unaccounted for.

It was not immediately clear how many residents of the area were missing.

China

China's foreign ministry said that nearly 100 Chinese nationals are among those unaccounted for in Nepal.

This is in addition to the 558 - including 260 foreigners - missing on the Tibetan side of the border.

India

Nepal's new tourism board figures show that 178 people from India are unaccounted for.

United States

Sixty-five US citizens are missing, the board said, a big increase on the original figure of less than 15.

Ukraine

Ukraine's foreign ministry cited Nepal's Tourist Police as saying that 53 Ukrainian nationals are unaccounted for, a figure matched by the tourism board.

Malaysia

Malaysia's Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said more than 50 Malaysians in Nepal are unreachable.

The Nepal Tourism Board put the number at 51.

Australia

Thirty-four Australians are missing following the floods, said Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, though the board put the figure at 35.

UK

Thirty-three people from the UK are missing.

Canada

Twenty-five Canadians are among those unaccounted for.

South Korea

South Korea's foreign ministry said that nine hydropower workers were out of contact in the Rasuwa district following the floods.

Singapore

Nine Singaporeans are unaccounted for.

Germany

Eight German citizens are missing.

Russia

Eight Russians are unaccounted for.

South Africa

Six South African nationals are missing.

Latvia

Six Latvian tourists are unaccounted for.

Japan

Five Japanese tourists are missing.

New Zealand

New Zealand's foreign affairs ministry said that five citizens are unaccounted for, a figure matched by the Nepal Tourism Board.

France

Four French nationals are among the missing.

Spain

Spain's foreign ministery reported that four Spaniards are unaccounted for. The Nepal Tourism Board put the figure at three.

Among the other nationalities are three Belgians.

The figures show that 10 people - two each from Ireland, Italy, Portugal, Netherlands and Hungary are also missing.

Belarus, Bulgaria, Finland, Israel, Lithuania, Philippines, Serbia, Sweden, and Switzerland each have one citizen that is unaccounted for.

Nationalities unconfirmed

The missing figures released by China, from its side of the border, included 260 foreigners.

But no breakdown on nationalities was provided.

Several of the tour groups operating in Nepal also announced missing foreigners whose nationalities had not been confirmed.

They include 77 with Trekkers Society, 26 with Kailash Journey and eight with Richa Tours & Travels.

It is unclear if they are included in the latest figures from the Nepal Tourism Board.
