US President Donald Trump has been asked by a religious leader to "have mercy" as he begins his second term in office.

During and interfaith interfaith Service of Prayer for the Nation at the Washington's National Cathedral, Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde made a plea to Mr Trump to be compassionate one day after being sworn into office.

"In the name of our God, I ask you to have mercy upon the people in our country who are scared now" Bishop Budde said as Mr Trump was seated in the first row of the sanctuary.

Bishop Budde also advocated for the rights of undocumented immigrants.

"They may not be citizens or have the proper documentation, but the vast majority of immigrants are not criminals," she said.

"They pay taxes, and are good neighbors. They are faithful members of our churches, mosques and synagogues, gurdwara, and temples."

Mr Trump has promised to crack down in immigration and deport undocumented residents during his second term in office.
