AMD and Nvidia to Resume AI Chip Sales to China After US Policy Reversal
by Joe Gallop · channelnewsAMD has confirmed it will restart shipments of its powerful MI308 AI chips to China, following a US government decision to allow license applications to proceed.
The move mirrors a similar decision made for rival Nvidia, which recently received approval to resume exports of its H20 AI chips to the Chinese market.
Both cases signal a policy shift from President Donald Trump’s administration, which had previously enforced strict curbs on advanced semiconductor sales to China over national security concerns.
An AMD spokesperson said the US Commerce Department notified the company that license applications for MI308 shipments will now be reviewed. AMD had previously warned the restrictions could cost it up to US$800 million (A$1.2 billion) in lost revenue this year.
The decision comes amid signs of easing US–China trade tensions.
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang (pictured above), currently in China, reportedly met with Trump last week to discuss AI and global tech leadership.
Nvidia, which has called China a key market, stands to gain billions in potential revenue from resumed H20 chip exports.
AMD shares jumped over 5% in premarket trading following the announcement. The company’s stock has risen 21% year to date.
