Cubs or White Sox? Pope Leo XIV’s true Chicago sports allegiance revealed
· New York PostOne of the world’s biggest questions has been answered after Chicago native Cardinal Robert Prevost was elected the 267th Pope.
Is he a Cubs fan or a White Sox fan? The answer, he’s southside all the way.
Pope Leo XIV’s brother, John Prevost, revealed to local Chicago news station WGN TV that the new pontiff was a White Sox fan, despite some rumors that he was a supporter of the Cubbies.
“He was never ever a Cubs fan, so I don’t know where that came from,” Prevost said. “He was always a Sox fan. Our mother was a Cubs fan. I don’t know, maybe that clued in there and our dad was a Cardinals fan, so I don’t know where all that came from.
“And all the Aunts, our mom’s family was from the north side, so that’s why they were Cubs fans.”
The Cubs had initially attempted to claim the new pope as one of their own and put up a message outside Wrigley Field that let it be known of Pope Leo XIV’s fandom.
“Hey Chicago. He’s a Cubs fan!” the sign read.
The image was posted to the Cubs’ social media, but the White Sox quickly responded after the record had been set straight.
In a post of their own a few hours later, the Cubs posted a clip of the interview with WGN TV and an image of the video board inside Rate Field, which read, “Hey Chicago. He’s a Sox fan!”
They also posted it along with the caption, “Well, would you look at that… Congratulations to Chicago’s own Pope Leo XIV.”
Pope Leo XIV became the first American to ever be elected pontiff in the Catholic Church’s 2,000-year history.
Prevost’s election had another group of sports fans talking – Knicks fans.
The new pope had graduated from Villanova University and some saw that as a sign from above that it truly could be the Knicks year – The Knicks are led by three fellow Wildcats in Jalen Brunson, Josh Hart and Mikal Bridges.
