Victor Robles carted off field after making insane diving catch for Mariners
· New York PostVictor Robles put his body on the line to make an impressive catch on Sunday, but had to be carted off the field because of it.
The Mariners’ right fielder sprinted across the field to make a leaping catch in the corner and careened into the netting along the wall at Oracle Park during Seattle’s game against the Giants.
The broadcast showed Robles hitting the netting with a loud thud.
He then immediately dropped down to his knees in pain.
MLB.com reported that Robles traveled 113 feet across the field in order to make the painstaking play and slammed into the wall at full speed, getting cut out at the knees by the wall before the top half of his body scorpianed into the netting.
“I just noticed that he was in pain and called the trainers immediately,” Mariners star Julio Rodriguez told reporters. “He made all that effort. But it was at a high cost.”
Robles appeared to hurt his arm on the play and the Seattle training staff came out to check on him almost immediately.
He was eventually placed on a cart and taken off the field while the crowd gave Robles a round of applause.
The injury occurred during a crucial play in the bottom of the ninth, with the Giants and Mariners tied at 4-4 and there was just one out with a runner on first base.
After the play had been reviewed, it was determined to be the second out.
Mariners manager Dan Wilson told reporters it was a shoulder-related injury and tests were done at Oracle Park.
“He’s such a force,” Wilson said. “Big hits, the great defense that he plays. He causes a lot of havoc on the bases, doing what he does out there. He’s a great guy to have at the top of your lineup. That’s why we’re hoping for the best.”
The Giants did eventually win on the next batter up when Wilmer Flores hit a base hit to drive in the winning run.
Robles finished the game with two hits for the Mariners and the Giants completed the series sweep of Seattle with the win on Sunday.
“Who knows what could have happened?” Giants right fielder Mike Yastrzemski said. “It’s one of those things where you hope he’s OK. I’ve never seen anything like that.”
