New Fury v Usyk concern emerges as fans now certain of result after weigh-in shock
by John Jones · Wales OnlineMore concerns have been raised about Tyson Fury as he prepares to face Oleksandr Usyk in their highly-anticipated rematch in Riyadh on Saturday night.
After losing the first fight by split decision back in May, Fury has vowed to get revenge and knock his Ukrainian opponent out in the ring. But the lead-up to the rematch has been characterised by moments of bizarre behaviour from 'The Gypsy King', leading fans of his to fear that he will lose for a second time this weekend.
The two men's final press conference saw them stare each other down in a remarkable 11-minute face-off in which they traded verbal jabs at each other. But there was still more strange behaviour to come at the weigh-in the following day, with Fury taking to the scales fully-clothed.
Wearing a leather jacket, white trousers and even a baseball cap, Fury refused to strip down and as a result tipped the scales at a career-heavy 20st 1lb. That weight puts him at a whopping four stone heavier than Usyk, who also then decided to take to the scales while fully dressed in a tracksuit.
Fury seemed keen to get the weigh-in over and done with, looking away from Usyk just a few seconds into their final face-off before walking away without giving an interview on camera.
That behaviour came after he was accused of 'trolling' those in attendance at an open workout earlier in the week, having taken to the ring and bobbed around for a few seconds without throwing a single punch on the pads. Having opted not to work out at all, he then bowed to the crowd in attendance and had his gloves removed.
The 36-year-old then gave a bizarre 18-word TV interview before again walking away. Asked what he had planned for Usyk in the ring, he said bluntly: "A lot of pain. Smash and damage. A lot of hurt. Hurt, serious hurt. A lot of damage."
His trainer Sugarhill Steward brushed off his fighter's behaviour, saying: "It was a little workout. We gave it our best. Tyson Fury is just ready right now, along with myself. He’s always had like a silly demeanour and [been] playing around, but this is a different side of him. He’s just ready, 100 per cent ready.”
But those comments did little to calm the fears of fight fans, who are now sure of Saturday's result following Fury's string of odd moments in the build-up.
"He's rattled, I see him getting knocked out within 4 rounds," said one, while another added: "I was backing Fury in the rematch, but he’s trying to do too much. Usyk, chin him early and send him into retirement."
A third wrote that Fury is "trying to play mind games.. but is scared," while another fan commented: "Tyson Fury is looking rattled on each public appearance last couple of days. Has the vibe of someone who is going to lose. Focus seems gone. If it’s a fairly one-way defeat does he retire?"
