Great British Bake Off's Alison Hammond forced to step in as star says 'I quit'

The Great British Bake Off semi-final was nearly thrown into chaos when contestant Georgie Grasso 'quit' during a challenge for patisserie week.

The four remaining bakers were tasked by Paul Hollywood to make an opera cake, which consists of many different layers. Georgie soon became overwhelmed with the tricky recipe and told her fellow contestants "I quit".

Host Alison Hammond quickly stepped-in to offer the contestant support and encourage with the challenge. "Oh my god I have done it wrong", Georgie said before adding, "I don't understand", as she put her face in her hands.

Georgie then stated: "I'm going, I've had enough, I'm going. I just don't want to do it. I'm done", before becoming emotional and adding: "I'm going to stand here until the end."

Putting her arm around a tearful Georgie, Alison could be heard saying: "Listen to me, I have been where you are, you can do it".

Alison comforted the baker and said: "Listen to me, I've been where you are, what you've just done, listen, this is what you're doing. You put yourself into a 'I can't do this'. Listen to me you've got this, a million percent."

She added: "Please, I'm begging ya, get that negative and throw it away right now".

Georgie replied: "Yeah", before Alison encouraged her that she knew how to bake the cake. Georgie returned to the kitchen and her opera cake finished in last place, but was a great effort.

Bake Off viewers rushed to social media so show their support for Georgie and Alison, with one fan writing: "Poor Georgie, gone into full on panic mode where your brain just goes into a "no, I can't do anything" spiral. Credit to Alison helping pull her out of it and credit to Georgie for getting something to serve #GBBO."

A second added: "Alison is such the empathetic friend you need to adjust your crown for you and get you back on track #GBBO", while a third chimed in: "Me watching Alison bring the positivity back .. what an amazing woman #GBBO

"I want Alison Hammond to be nearby at all times to give me pep talks when I’m feeling low #GBBO", added another.

Georgie made it through to the Bake Off final after Gill Howard was sent home.
