by Taite Johnson · Wales OnlineA yellow weather alert for snow and ice has been issued across Wales with the Met Office cautioning about potential travel disruptions and risk of injuries. The warning for snow and ice is in effect for 16 places in Wales across a period of 12 hours.
From 12am until midday on Friday, January 2, snow is expected to fall across the country as the temperature plummets as we start the new year.
Weather alerts have been issued throughout the UK with heavier snowfall anticipated in Scotland before moving southwards and across Wales.
Up to 5cm of snow could accumulate in areas such as north Wales where it will be the heaviest while other parts of the country are expected to see between 1-2cm.
The Met Office forecast states: "An area of sleet and snow is expected to move southeastwards across parts of England and Wales lasting approximately two or three hours in any one place.
"Where snow falls 1cm or 2cm is likely for some and perhaps as much as 5cm snow possible in a few spots, especially higher ground of north Wales, northwest England, and perhaps the northwest Midlands.
"Some ice may form as a result of precipitation falling on to frozen surfaces and icy patches will also develop quickly as sleet and snow clears."
Areas in Wales issued with a yellow snow and ice warning for Friday, January 2, are: Blaenau Gwent, Caerphilly, Cardiff, Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Conwy, Denbighshire, Flintshire, Gwynedd, Merthyr Tydfil, Monmouthshire, Newport, Powys, Rhondda Cynon Taf, Torfaen, Wrexham.
