Equity futures in the United States retreated from all-time peaks during Monday’s pre-market session. Dow Jones Industrial Average contracts dropped roughly 0.8%, while futures tied to the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 declined approximately 0.6% each.

This downturn followed a robust performance during the previous week. Both the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite reached unprecedented closing levels, while the Dow Jones momentarily surpassed the 50,000 threshold for the first time in history.

The tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 experienced its sharpest single-session decline since the final days of March, shedding 1.5%.

Crude Prices Surge on Middle East Concerns

Oil markets drove much of Monday’s volatility. West Texas Intermediate crude jumped 1.8%, trading north of $107 per barrel. International benchmark Brent crude advanced roughly 1.1%, crossing the $110 threshold.

News of unmanned aircraft incidents targeting the United Arab Emirates, combined with faltering diplomatic negotiations with Iran, propelled energy prices upward. President Donald Trump issued a stern warning Sunday, stating that “the clock is ticking” for Tehran to negotiate an agreement, otherwise there “won’t be anything left.”

The surge in energy costs intensified inflation worries. This development pressured Treasury bonds lower while driving the benchmark 10-year yield to levels not witnessed since the opening weeks of 2025.

Market participants have significantly reduced their expectations for monetary policy easing from the Federal Reserve. Derivatives markets are now assigning increased probability to an interest rate increase before year-end.

Cryptocurrency Markets Face Steep Losses

Bitcoin plunged below the $77,000 mark Monday, changing hands at $76,946 during early trading hours. This represented its weakest performance since the beginning of May.

Bitcoin had temporarily rallied above $80,000 during the previous week but failed to sustain that momentum. Rising Treasury yields dampened appetite for higher-risk assets such as digital currencies, as investors rotated toward more secure fixed-income alternatives offering improved returns.

Ethereum declined 3% to reach $2,122. XRP retreated 1.5% to $1.39. Solana shed 2%, while Cardano and Polygon each fell approximately 1.5%.

Among prominent digital assets, Dogecoin suffered the steepest losses, plummeting 5.6%.

Notwithstanding the broad selloff, institutional appetite for Bitcoin showed resilience, evidenced by sustained capital flows into spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds.

Market participants also adopted a cautious stance in anticipation of Nvidia’s quarterly financial disclosure scheduled for Wednesday. Nvidia’s performance is widely expected to shape broader risk appetite throughout financial markets.

Corporate Earnings Calendar

This week features multiple high-profile corporate earnings announcements. Nvidia delivers its quarterly results Wednesday, sharing the spotlight with Target. Walmart publishes its financial performance Thursday.

Consumer price index figures published during the prior week exceeded analyst projections. This outcome further diminished expectations that the Federal Reserve would implement near-term interest rate reductions.

Investors will maintain close attention on both corporate earnings announcements and any developments emerging from Iran-US diplomatic discussions throughout the remainder of the week.
