Everton were denied a chance for a stoppage time winner against Manchester United when referee Andrew Madley initially pointed to the penalty spot after Ashley Young went down under a challenge from Harry Maguire.

But after consulting his pitchside monitor following a recommendation from Matthew Donohue on VAR duties, the onfield official overturned his decision.

In a game of two halves, with bright sunshine causing issues for whichever side was defending the Gwladys Street goal, the Blues raced into a 2-0 lead by the interval thanks to goals from Beto (19) and Abdoulaye Doucoure (33). However, they were undone by a couple of clinical strikes from the visitors after the break as Bruno Fernandes reduced arrears with a 72nd minute free kick and Manuel Ugarte drew United level 10 minutes from the end.

Jordan Pickford 7

Was brave to hack out a dangerous left wing cross from Dorgu, getting caught by Hojlund in the process and there was little he could do about either goal as United fought their way back into the contest through sweet strikes from Bruno Fernandes and Manuel Ugarte.

Jake O’Brien 7

Smart display, especially after he was booked in first half stoppage time for bringing down Dorgu, he defended well while also getting forwards when he could, putting an inviting cross in that almost fashioned a second goal for Doucoure.

Vitalii Mykolenko 6

Stood his ground and produced a disciplined display, maintaining his shape without being able to get forward too much.

James Tarkowski 7

Strong defensive performance from the captain, leading by example from the back, displaying brains as well as brawn.

Jarrad Branthwaite 8

A defensive colossus for the most part and imperious in the air – his back header to Pickford was an outrageous piece of skill – he looked up for this one after his disappointment in the corresponding fixture at Old Trafford.

Idrissa Gueye 7

The veteran continues to push for a new contract and was typically busy display in the engine room, providing the shield in front of his defence to enable Everton to build their attacks.

James Garner 8

Determined showing against his former club where he learnt his trade, he put himself about while also drawing United into several rash challenges, although he was booked himself for bringing down Ugarte.

Abdoulaye Doucoure 8

Terrific anticipation and bravery to attack the chance that created his close-range headed goal, his work rate has seemingly vindicated David Moyes’ decision to bring him straight back in.

Jesper Lindstrom 7

Busy display on the right, working hard on and off the ball plus it was his pass to Beto that started the move for the second goal, it was after he went off that United started to find their way back in.

Jack Harrison 6

Put in a real shift down the left wing, taking the game to United and was unfortunate not to double Everton’s lead moments before Doucoure put in the rebound.

Beto 8

Fifth goal in as many games for the rejuvenated striker who showed his predatory instincts, he led the line well and battled hard but just couldn’t get quite enough on his late headed chance.

Substitutes

Ashley Young (on 53 for Lindstrom) 6

Brought on against his former clubs to try and shore things up but picked up a booking and was then denied a penalty after going down under Maguire’s challenge only for VAR to overturn the decision following a pitchside review.

Carlos Alcaraz (on 81 for Doucoure)

Fresh legs late on to try and add some impetus.

Tim Iroegbunam (on 81 for Garner)

Ditto and made some crucial interceptions.
