Ryan Tverberg scored a goal and provided an assist to lead the Toronto Marlies to a 6-2 victory over the Laval Rocket on Sunday.

Logan Shaw, Easton Cowan, Henry Thrun, Alex Nylander and Cédric Paré also found the net for the Marlies, who now lead the series 2-1.

Alex Belzile and Owen Beck replied for the Rocket.

After Marlies head coach John Gruden opted for Dennis Hildeby in the first game, Artur Akhtyamov was in action in goal for the Toronto side. He made 26 saves.

At the other end of the rink, Kaapo Kahkonen saved eight of the 12 shots he faced for the Montreal Canadiens’ farm team. Hunter Shepard made 10 saves in relief.

Pascal Vincent’s side had won the first game 3-1, but then lost the second 6-2.

The fourth game of the series will take place on Tuesday, once again at the Coca-Cola Coliseum. The fifth game, if necessary, will be played on Friday at Place Bell.

More disciplinary issues

Having conceded four goals on 10 power plays during the second game, Lucas Condotta was sent off after just five seconds for four minutes for high-sticking on Sunday. Shaw took advantage to open the scoring after 11 seconds of play.

Shaw received a short pass from the blue line and beat Kahkonen with a precise shot from the middle of the attacking zone. The former Canadiens player has scored four goals since the start of the series.

The Rocket had started the previous two games with 2-0 leads, but this time they were on the receiving end of the same treatment from the Marlies. Cutting in from the wing, Cowan doubled the home side’s lead when he caught Kahkonen off guard with a shot from the edge of the zone, despite being marked by Marc Del Gaizo, at 5:35.

The bleeding wasn’t over yet. Thrun pushed the puck behind the goal line whilst the net was knocked off its mountings by a Rocket player at 7:58. Kahkonen was completely out of position on the play after making the initial save.

Positioned right next to Kahkonen, Nylander extended the lead by deflecting the puck into the net off a shot from Luke Haymes at 15:32.

At 14:13 of the second period, Tverberg made it 5-0 by breaking away and beating Shepard with a fine feint.

A minute later, Belzile finally put the Rocket on the scoreboard by picking up a rebound from Laurent Dauphin in front of the net.

Beck cut the deficit to three goals at 11:02 of the third period by finishing off a fine pass from Sean Farrell.

Paré ended the Rocket’s hopes at 14:35 with a wrist shot from the slot.
