Inside Catherine O'Hara's Relationship With Husband Bo Welch Before Death

News broke on Friday, January 30, 2026, that O'Hara died at the age of 71. The Schitt's Creek alum's cause of death has yet to be revealed.
O'Hara's sudden death had many fans wondering about her life and legacy, including who she is survived by. She was lucky in love, meeting Welch in 1987 on the Beetlejuice set and tying the knot five years later.
Despite falling for each other on the movie set, it wasn't until director Tim Burton got involved that Welch actually made a move.
"Tim told me, ‘You should ask Catherine out.' It didn't even occur to me that I was even supposed to talk to actors," Welch told Uproxx in 2015. "But since Tim told me to, I did, and then we dated and we're married and here we are today."

How Did Catherine O'Hara Meet Bo Welch?
O'Hara met Welch on the set of Beetlejuice in 1987. In the film, O'Hara played Delia, while Welch was a production designer. Following their meet-cute, O'Hara moved from Canada to Los Angeles to continue her romance with Welch.
O'Hara recalled during a 2019 interview with The New Yorker that she and Welch started dating toward the end of filming. "We went on location at the end of the movie, and we started dating. I moved to L.A. to be with him," she shared. "Yeah, I moved for love."

The Best in Show actress welcomed her first child with Welch, son Matthew, in 1994. Their second son, Luke, was born in 1997. The couple raised their sons in Canada, but both of them have followed in their parents' footsteps and worked in Hollywood.

In addition to working together on 1988's Beetlejuice, where Welch and O'Hara met, they collaborated on A Series of Unfortunate Events. Welch was a director on five episodes of the Netflix series and the production designer for the show, which ran from 2017 to 2019. O'Hara, for her part, played Dr. Orwell in four episodes.
