In maps: Strikes across Iran and the Middle East

US and Israeli strikes against Iran have continued unabated for a second day, with Israel saying it had hit targets "in the heart of Tehran".

Meanwhile Iran has intensified its retaliatory attacks on Israel and Gulf Arab countries. It vowed to step up strikes after the killing of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and several members of his senior leadership.

At least nine people were killed in an attack on an Israeli city, and military and civilian targets including an American naval base in Bahrain and Dubai's international airport in the United Arab Emirates were targeted.

On the first day on Saturday, Khamenei's compound in the capital Tehran was among US and Israeli targets, as well as key military sites across the country.

On Sunday the Israeli military said that the extensive strikes of the first day of the joint US-Israeli operation had opened a "path to Tehran", destroying air defences in western and central Iran.

But they said many targets remained, and later Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said strikes on the capital would be escalated.

Several verified videos from Tehran showed large plumes of smoke rising above the capital on Saturday.

BBC Verify obtained satellite imagery taken over the city that morning, which showed significant damage to part of the compound of Leadership House, the office of Khamenei.

The location matches verified footage filmed in Tehran in the aftermath of explosions in the area.

There are also images showing that the Narmak neighbourhood, where former president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad lives, has been hit.

Another strike hit the area around the ministry of intelligence.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said its strikes in Tehran targeted locations where senior political and security figures were gathered.

Strikes across Iran

There have been few reports of US and Israeli strikes outside Tehran on Sunday, although the Israeli military said it had destroyed two fighter aircraft in the north-western city of Tabriz. Also, US President Donald Trump said US forces had sunk nine Iranian naval ships and "largely destroyed" their naval headquarters.

US Central Command said that on Saturday night it had struck Iranian ballistic missile facilities with B-2 stealth bombers armed with 2,000-lb bombs, without specifying a location.

Earlier on Saturday, at least 153 people were killed at a girls' school in Minab in the south of the country, Iranian state media report.

The Islamic Republic News Agency (Irna) cited a spokesman for the country's ministry of education saying that the school was "targeted by three missile attacks".

The BBC has not been able to independently verify this - international news organisations are often refused visas to Iran which severely limits their ability to gather information about what's going on inside the country.

Military sites were targeted in Kermanshah, Qom, Isfahan, Tabriz and Karaj, as well as at Iranian naval facilities in Kenarak in the south of the country.

A video sent to the BBC from the small city of Kamyaran shows that an IRGC base was bombed.

The IDF warned Iranian civilians to evacuate areas near military sites and installations ahead of the strikes.

Where has Iran attacked?

Iran continued retaliatory strikes on Israel and US bases in the region on Sunday - the Revolutionary Guards announced a "large-scale" attack following the death of Ayatollah Khamenei. Explosions have been heard in Qatar, UAE, Bahrain and Kuwait.

At least nine people were killed on Sunday when a missile hit Beit Shemesh, in Israel, and the US Pentagon said three service members had been killed in action.

Three people have been killed and several injured in the UAE, the country's defence ministry said on Sunday, while the same day Kuwait's health ministry reported one death.

The spokesperson for Kuwait's ministry of defence posted on X on Saturday that the Ali Al-Salem airbase had been targeted by a number of ballistic missiles, but that Kuwaiti air defence forces had successfully intercepted them.

Bahrain's National Communication Centre said on Saturday the service centre of the US Navy's Fifth Fleet had been "subjected to a missile attack". It is responsible for operations across the Gulf, Red Sea, Arabian Sea, and parts of the Indian Ocean.

Also in Bahrain, one verified clip, filmed from a moving vehicle, shows the moment a missile strikes. An explosion follows, sending fragments and debris into the air.

Other verified footage from Bahrain shows dark plumes of smoke rising as sirens sound across the city. The interior ministry said the airport was damaged after being targeted by a drone. There were unconfirmed reports of continuing attacks on Sunday morning.

On Sunday evening a drone strike on the US naval base, which caused a major fire, one official told the BBC - but there were no reports of casualties.

So far, there have been four people wounded by Iranian attacks in Bahrain, the official added.

Jordan, which borders Israel, said its armed forces shot down ballistic missiles targeting its territory. An official told the AFP news agency there was no casualties but only material damage.

Meanwhile, Oman's state news agency reported on Sunday Duqm commercial port was targeted by two drones, injuring one worker. Oman has been a key mediator in the US-Iran talks for years and had so far been spared Iranian attacks.
