Bus crashes into cars on Virginia highway killing 5

May 29 (UPI) -- Five people died and more than two dozen were injured Friday morning after a bus crashed into multiple vehicles along a Virginia interstate, state police said.

The crash happened around 2:35 p.m. on Interstate 95 in Stafford county, the Virginia State Police said in a statement to USA Today.

Officials told NBC News vehicles on the highway had slowed down for a work zone, but the bus failed to reduce its speed and struck six vehicles.

The five fatalities involved people in the vehicles struck by the bus. Emergency responders transported 34 people to area hospitals, with three people sustaining critical injuries.

Police said the crash was under investigation with possible criminal charges pending.
