S. Korea calls NSC meeting after North claims drone intrusions
· UPIJan. 10 (Asia Today) -- South Korea's presidential office on Saturday convened a working-level National Security Council coordination meeting after North Korea claimed it shot down drones it said were sent from the South.
The meeting was chaired by Kim Hyun-jong, first deputy director of the National Security Office, the presidential office told Yonhap News. Officials planned to review details of the North's claim and decide how to respond, it said.
North Korea earlier said in a statement issued in the name of a spokesperson for the General Staff of the Korean People's Army that South Korea should be prepared to "pay the price" for what it called a renewed provocation that violated its sovereignty using drones. The statement claimed the North shot down drones it said infiltrated its airspace in September 2025 and on Sunday.
South Korea's Ministry of National Defense said the military confirmed it did not operate any drones on the dates cited by North Korea. The ministry said President Lee Jae-myung ordered a thorough investigation and that relevant agencies were verifying the details.
