Lindsay Clancy jury says it's deadlocked; judge says try again

Sept. 1 (UPI) -- On its fourth day of deliberations, the jury in the Lindsay Clancy trial on Tuesday told the judge that they were deadlocked, and he told them to keep trying.

Judge William Sullivan told the jurors to go back and continue their deliberations.

"I know that this was a long trial," NBC reported Sullivan said. "I know there were over 80 witnesses, over 300 exhibits. But because of that, I'm going to ask you to go back out, keeping in mind all the instructions that I gave you. To go out and to continue your deliberations at this time."

The attorneys didn't object, and Clancy did not appear to show any emotion.

Massachusetts law says that the judge can instruct jurors to go back no more than twice without their consent. After that, the judge can declare a mistrial.

Clancy, 36, is charged with three counts of first-degree murder in the killings of her three children: Cora, 5; Dawson 3, and Callan, 8 months. The children's bodies were found by their father, Patrick Clancy, in their Duxbury, Mass., home in January 2023.

She pleaded not guilty and claimed she was suffering from postpartum psychosis and bipolar disorder.

The trial began July 20 and saw 21 days of testimony, with 85 witnesses called, including 72 for the prosecution.

On Tuesday, defense attorney Kevin Reddington said he would absolutely go to trial again if there is a hung jury.

"Maybe today's the day; we'll see. I don't know," Reddington said earlier Tuesday.

The jury is made up of nine women and three men. They have five options for their verdict: guilty of first-degree murder, second-degree murder, manslaughter, not guilty or not guilty by reason of insanity.

Jurors had one question Friday, asking to review pill bottles and a knife that were evidence, NBC reported.
